As the people of Mumbai prepare for its favourite festival – Ganesh Chaturthi, every Ganpati idol workshop in and around Mumbai is buzzing with activity. Over a lakh idols are created in the several hundred workshops where artisans carve, paint and give finishing touches to the idols. While for many this is a family-run business, several workshops also employ skilled artisans – many of whom are armed with degrees in fine arts.
I have put together some of the many pics that I took at an idol workshop near Kandivali in Mumbai. Set-up close to the busy Western Express Highway, this small-scale workshop had few artisans working on the Ganpati idols and while I tried to strike up a conversation with some of them they did not seem interested in speaking to me speak. So I left them alone and let my camera do the talking.
